FOREWORD

Trekking route and camping on a 39 km / 24 miles journey. The longest road starts at Qoriwayrachina, at km 82 of the railroad to Machu Picchu. It goes through different ecosystems, colossal archaeological sites in landscapes rich in flora and fauna, until it reaches de citadel of Machu Picchu. A circuit to Salkantay (6271 masl / 20574 fasl) starts from this route. Contact a specialized travel agency. Degree of difficulty: intermediate. Minimum time: 4 days.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO  – KM 82 – WAYLLABAMBA

At approximately 7:00 am you will be picked up at the hotel and travel by bus to the kilometer 82 trail head.  From there a short walk takes us to the Piscacucho control office to register.  Next we will begin our trek towards Llactapata.  Along the way we will observe the agricultural methods of the area.  Once arriving in Llactapata we will have lunch and observe the beautiful surrounding landscapes.  Next we will continue on until arriving at our first campsite in Wayllabamba located at 3,000 meters above sea level.  Here we will have our dinner and spend the night in the serenity of mountains.

DAY 2: WAYLLABAMBA-PACAYMAYO

After breakfast we will undertake the challenge of a 4 hour climb to Warmiwañuska (4,200 meters).    Next we will travel down into the valley where we will stop for lunch. After lunch we continue on our way until arriving at Pacaymayo, which is our second overnight campsite.  We will have dinner and prepare for cold temperatures this particular night.

DAY 3: PACAYMAYO-RUNKURAQAY-SAYAMARCA-PHUYUPATAMARCA-WIÑAYHUAYNA

We will begin with a hearty breakfast, which will fuel to us to continue. On this day we will walk by the original Inca trail passing through the cloud forest and viewing the snow capped mountains.  We will see the archaeological complexes of Sayacmarca, Conchamarca and Phuyupatamarca. Arriving at Wiñaywayna (2,700 meters), our last campsite,
we will have dinner and spend the night.

DAY 4: WIÑAYHUAYNA-MACHUPICCHU-CUSCO

We will wake up very early in the morning (4:00 am) and have a quick breakfast to begin our last day of our trek.  We will walk for 2 hours arriving at Intipunku (The doorway of the Sun), which is the entrance to Machupicchu from the Inca trail to experience the wonderful dawn at Machupicchu.  After remaining approximately half an hour, we descend into the site of Machupicchu arriving at 9:30 am, where we will begin a guided tour of approximately 2 hours.  After the guided tour you will have free time to explore the site on your own. In the afternoon we will begin our return to Cusco.
